This was proved when 55 mph speed limits were in effect. Lower speeds will also reduce fuel consumption. But I question a couple of things in Heather Knight’s story. As tragic as they are, I think pedestrian injuries and deaths are sometimes a result of inattention (by both drivers and pedestrians) rather than just speed. As far as issuing fines to people who can’t afford them goes, “If you can’t afford the fine, don’t commit the crime.”Slow down. For a 5-mile trip on city streets, a 10 mph increase in speed only saves about 2.5 minutes.John DavisUnion CityEnding occupation onlypath to Israel peaceRelated ArticlesLetters to the Editor | Letters...

By Amer Madhani, Tara Copp and Darlene Superville | Associated PressWASHINGTON — President Joe Biden on Tuesday confirmed that U.S. citizens are among the hostages captured by Hamas as he condemned the militant group for the “sheer evil” of its shocking weekend assault on Israel.“Our hearts may be broken but our resolve is clear,” said Biden, who compared the brutality of the Hamas militants to that of the Islamic State terrorist group. He added: “Let there be no doubt. The United States has Israel’s back. We’ll make sure the Jewish and democratic state of Israel can defend itself today, tomorrow as we always have.”The president coupled his unflinching defense for Israel with only a glancing reference to the suffering that innocent Palestinians are enduring from Israel’s barrage of retaliatory fire on the Gaza Strip, where the Hamas attack was launched. That hardline approach could prove more difficult to sustain going forward if...

The athletic program he took over at Tulane in 2015 was thriving, especially a football program still basking in what was accomplished last season. But when the job as athletic director at Washington came open in August and Dannen became identified in the search process, the thought of making a career-defining move entered his mind.“I then I went through six weeks of nerves about whether I could actually get the job or not,” Dannen said Tuesday.Dannen did get the job, taking over at Washington at a time with major changes on the horizon for the university. Analysis: Eagles, 49ers clear front-runners in NFC; AFC is more jumbled

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:24:40 GMT

The Eagles and 49ers are the clear front-runners in the NFC while the AFC is jumbled five weeks into the season.San Francisco made the biggest statement so far with a dominant 42-10 win over Dallas on Sunday night. The 49ers (5-0) have been the NFL’s most complete team. They can win behind Brock Purdy’s passing, Christian McCaffrey’s running or by leaning on Nick Bosa and a stingy defense. An offense that’s loaded with Purdy, McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk easily handled one of the league’s top defenses. The Cowboys couldn’t do anything to stop San Francisco. Injuries might be the only thing that can slow down the 49ers. They learned that last season when Purdy, who began the season as the No. 3 quarterback, tore an elbow ligament in the NFC championship game against Philadelphia. The defending NFC champion Eagles (5-0) are still building their identity, but keep finding ways to win despite playing below the standard they set last season on their way to a Super ...

It had been more than 50 years since a woman played on the PGA Tour. And then there was Michelle Wie West, who played eight times on t...
