CHICAGO — A 3-year-old boy has died after a piece of furniture fell on him on the city's West Side.Officers responded to an injured toddler on the 2800 block of South Pulaski around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said a piece of furniture had fell on top of him. The boy was pronounced dead on the scene. CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson has appointed the first-ever Deputy Mayor of Community Safety in efforts to combat root causes of crime and violence, the City of Chicago said.Johnson announced Friday that Garien Gatewood, the director of the Illinois Justice Project (IJP), will serve in the newly created governmental role.In his time at IJP, Gatewood took action to refocus youth and adults away from the justice system and give support to those re-entering society after incarceration. CHICAGO — A boy was injured and several businesses, including an apartment were damaged after a shootout in Irving Park early Friday morning.According to police, a black Infiniti truck and red sedan were driving westbound near the 2800 block of West Irving Park Road around 3:05 a.m. when an anonymous witness said people in the vehicles began firing shots at one another. A 17-year-old boy was dropped off at a local hospital by the red sedan with a graze wound to the head. He is listed in good condition. Pedestrian fatally struck on Stevenson Expressway Police say the boy refused to answer questions. A neighbor described the shots going through his window."I heard gunshots and ran to my daughter's room and while I'm running, the shots go through my window." A 42-year-old man charged Friday with arson at a mosque in St. Paul this week was already on probation for another fire.Police arrested Said Murekezi, also known by the last name Ntamugabumwe, on Wednesday night. The fire at Tawhid Islamic Center of Minnesota at Dale Street and University Avenue occurred Wednesday morning.No one was injured in the fire. The mosque was under construction as it was being remodeled.Said Murekezi. A hit-and-run driver struck and critically injured a 40-year-old man who was on a downtown St. Paul freeway Thursday night.Investigators believed they’d found the vehicle and driver as of Friday morning, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.Jeffrey Allen Welage Jr., of Mounds View, was on Interstate 94 near Jackson Street when the vehicle struck him at 10:53 p.m. Thursday. He was on foot at the time and the circumstances are under investigation, the State Patrol said. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A suspect wanted for attempted murder in Dudley, North Carolina, was taken into custody in Schenectady on May 18. Law enforcement agencies believe Danielle Morrisey to be responsible for a shooting incident in Dudley on April 16, during which a female suffered multiple gunshot wounds. SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A woman in Saugerties has been charged for exposing herself at a McDonald's, according to police. Cheryl Johnsen, 49, of Westbury, was arrested on May 18. At 4:49 p.m. on May 18, Saugerties Police responded to a call at the 350 Route 212 McDonald's location for a report of a female that was exposing herself in the parking lot. An investigation determined that Johnsen had laid on the sidewalk next to the restaurant, pulled her pants and underwear off, and allegedly began to repeatedly raise her legs above her head, before deciding to run around a vehicle in the parking lot. Police say Johnsen then got into her SUV and popped out of the sunroof, with her breasts exposed.
