FOXBORO — Maybe it was a blip.Or a maybe a message sent. Or a nothing-burger served at midfield during a steamy Sunday practice. Or perhaps it was a footnote that just happened to hang at the top of the page instead of the bottom. But whatever it was, rookie quarterback Malik Cunningham taking snaps from David Andrews at the start of team periods was no accident. After 20 minutes of warmups and fundamental drills, the Patriots broke into their first 11-on-11 period of a shorts-and-shells practice. Cunningham, who electrified the Pats offense late in the preseason opener with his lightning quickness and speed, dropped under center to begin work against the starting defense. Then, thunder rolled in the distance.Bill Belichick blew his whistle, hustled the team off the field before real lightning could strike and trotted into the safety of Gillette Stadium. Thirty minutes passed, players and coaches reconvened under sunny skies, and Cunningham took over again. He made a couple hand-offs, ...Bear bursts into Colorado home, 82-year-old woman injured

A young bear burst into a Colorado home and injured an 82-year-old woman inside, Colorado officials said. The encounter took place shortly after midnight Friday, Aug. 11, in Boncarbo, a community near Trinidad, state Parks and Wildlife officials said in a news release. The woman, who was awakened by a crashing sound and her dog growling, discovered a cinnamon-colored black bear weighing about 100 pounds in her mud room, officials said. The bear, estimated to be a cub or yearling, leaped at her, officials said. The woman pushed the bear off her and closed the door, suffering scratches to her legs. The bear “scrambled frantically around the room,” then climbed some shelves and escaped by smashing through a window screen, wildlife officials said.Officials set a trap for the bear in case it returns. It is the second bear attack in the Trinidad area in two weeks, but officials do not believe the incidents are related.Trinidad is about 200 miles south of Denver.Bear attacks in the U.S. are ra...Nurse says Christian song was her rallying cry after she was kidnapped in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — A U.S. nurse who was released by kidnappers in Haiti last week says a Christian song called “See a Victory” became her battle cry after she and her young daughter were abducted.Alix Dorsainvil and her child were freed Wednesday, nearly two weeks after they were snatched at gunpoint from the campus of a Christian-run school near Port-au-Prince.El Roi Haiti, the Christian aid organization founded by Dorsainvil’s husband, said Thursday the pair were not harmed and are healthy. On Saturday, the group posted a message from Dorsainvil on its website.“I am completely humbled by the outpouring of support and prayer for myself and my sweet baby both during and following our time in captivity,” said Dorsainvil, who is from New Hampshire. “God was so very present in the fire with us and I pray that when I find the words to tell our story, that the mighty name of Jesus may be glorified and many people will come to know his love.”...A central Kansas police force sparked a firestorm by raiding a newspaper and the publisher’s home

MARION, Kan. (AP) — A small central Kansas police department is facing a torrent of criticism for raiding a local newspaper’s office and the owner and publisher’s home, seizing computers and cellphones, and, in the publisher’s view, stressing his 98-year-old mother enough to cause her weekend death.Several press freedom watchdogs condemned the Marion Police Department’s actions as a blatant violation of the U.S. Constitution’s protection for a free press. The Marion County Record’s editor and publisher, Eric Meyer, worked with his staff Sunday to reconstruct stories, ads and other materials for its next edition Wednesday, even as he took time in the afternoon to provide a local funeral home with information about his mother, Joan, the paper’s co-owner. A search warrant tied the raids by Marion police, led Friday morning by Chief Gideon Cody, to a dispute between the newspaper and a local restaurant owner, Kari Newell. She is accusing the newspaper of invading her p...Car crashes into coffee shop, damages property in East York
