OTTAWA — Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Tuesday she is concerned about the safety of India’s diplomats following what she called an “unacceptable” poster for an upcoming protest in Toronto. The poster is the latest in a string of problems in recent weeks that have increased tension between Ottawa and New Delhi over Sikh separatists in Canada. The upcoming protest is planned in memory of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was killed last month in a shooting in Surrey, B.C. Niijar was a vocal opponent of India and supporter of an independent Sikh state, but police say they have found no link to India in their investigation. The protest is to begin Saturday at the Great Punjab Business Centre in Mississauga, Ont. and end at the Indian consulate near downtown Toronto.A poster for the event circulating on social media includes photos of India’s top two diplomats in Canada — High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and Toronto Consul General Apoorva Srivasta...

Competition Bureau movie ticket price-dripping case should be dismissed: Cineplex

TORONTO — Cineplex Inc. says a case launched by the Competition Bureau against the theatre chain over movie ticket fees should be dismissed because it’s based on a “mischaracterization.”The case launched by the competition watchdog in May is based on the premise that fees applied to some Cineplex movie tickets bought online constitute price dripping, a deceptive practice where customers are drawn into a purchase without full disclosure of the final cost. The bureau has alleged that consumers can’t buy tickets online at advertised prices because there is a mandatory $1.50 fee for booking online. However, in a response filed with the Competition Tribunal on June 30, Toronto-based Cineplex said the bureau’s claims are “without merit” and should be thrown out with costs awarded to Cineplex. “Cineplex denies each and every allegation in the application,” the company said.“Cineplex denies any wrongdoing at all.”Cineplex’...

NEW YORK (AP) — Defending champions Miki Sudo and Joey Chestnut have continued their reign in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest. Sudo forced down 39 1/2 hot dogs and buns to claim a ninth women's title in Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, before stormy weather moved in and delayed the men's competition.Sudo beat Mayoi Ebihara’s 33 1/2 hot dogs in 10 minutes Tuesday in a contest that appeared to be much closer until the final count was announced. The unofficial real-time counter showed the two women tied throughout much of the competition. A final count of plates settled the score.Sudo, 37, was disappointed in her winning total, which was nine hot dogs short of her all-time high. She said competition from the 27-year-old Ebihara had thrown her off. Substance found at White House tests positive for cocaine “The first couple minutes, I found myself watching her, which I never want to do. How do fireworks get their colors?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Many of us will sit back this Fourth of July to take in dazzling fireworks shows — but have you ever wondered how fireworks get their colors? Meteorologist Kristen Currie showed us the science behind this annual tradition. Austin Symphony holds concert and firework show Fireworks contain gunpowder and an element like copper or sodium. It's the different elements that produce different colors. For example, barium is used to produce green fireworks. Strontium makes red fireworks, and titanium creates white. Special effects, like gold sparks, are typically created by iron filings and charcoal. Loud bangs are produced by aluminum powder. Although setting off fireworks can be exhilarating, local first responders are asking you to attend professional fireworks shows as opposed to buying at-home-use fireworks and sparklers."Fireworks are simply too dangerous and unpredictable to be used safely by consumers,” Travis County Fire Marshal Tony Callaway said, in part, in a re...
