By Matthew Daly and Tom Krisher | Associated PressWASHINGTON — The Biden administration is proposing strict new automobile pollution limits that would require up to two-thirds of new vehicles sold in the U.S. to be electric by 2032, a nearly tenfold increase over current electric vehicle sales. The proposed regulation, announced Wednesday by the Environmental Protection Agency, would set tailpipe emissions limits for the 2027 through 2032 model years that are the strictest ever imposed — and call for far more new EV sales than the auto industry agreed to less than two years ago.The new rules do not affect California, which already has the nation’s toughest tailpipe emissions standards. The new rules’ goals for electric vehicles, while groundbreaking nationally, also fall short of California’s existing rules.Last August, at the direction of Gov. Gavin Newsom, the California Air Resources Board approved landmark rules to prohibit the sale of all new gasoline-powered c...22 arrested in San Jose sex crimes sweep operation

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — A hippopotamus descended from animals illegally brought to Colombia by the late drug kingpin Pablo Escobar has died in a collision with an SUV on a highway near Escobar’s hacienda, environmental authorities said Wednesday. The hippos, which spread from the estate into nearby rivers and now number more than 100, have no natural predators in Colombia and have been declared an invasive species that could upset the ecosystem. The crash late Tuesday reflected the additional danger they pose to motorists. Vehicle occupants were unharmed in the accident in the northwest on a highway from Bogotá to Medellín, police said. The hippopotamus died immediately afterward and was removed to be analyzed, environmental authorities said.“This is one of the dangers that the presence of this species represents. Many of them cross the highway where many vehicles pass, it is also a danger to people,” said David Echeverri López, a biologist at Cornare, the local environmental author...La desesperación acecha: migrantes en México se lanzan al peligroso río Bravo para llegar a EEUU

CLEVELAND (AP) — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected in the first inning Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians following a heated exchange with umpires over a play that was not initially reviewed by instant replay.Boone spent several minutes pleading his case after the Yankees appeared to end the first with a double play.Cleveland had runners at second and third with one out when Josh Naylor hit a looper to center field that Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks appeared to catch with a sliding grab. Hicks then threw to second for a force-out and an apparent inning-ending double play. However, as both teams left the field, a replay was shown on the giant left-field scoreboard of Hicks failing to make the catch. It wasn’t immediately clear if Guardians manager Terry Francona had requested a challenge in the allotted 15 seconds.Crew chief Larry Vanover huddled with the umpires for several minutes in the middle of the infield and first spoke to Francona, who appeared to ...Weinstein returns to NY prison system after LA conviction
