New York (CNN) — Authorities across the US are working to ensure New Year’s revelers’ security this weekend, particularly in New York, where law enforcement officials say the war in Gaza has contributed to the concern of lone-wolf attacks, though they stress there is “no specific reporting regarding any threats.”A joint threat assessment based on an analysis from 10 law enforcement agencies — the FBI, the US Department of Homeland Security and the New York Police Department among them — says the Israel-Hamas war “has created a heightened threat environment.”The “Intelligence Community remains concerned about lone offenders using online platforms to express threats of violence against Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities, as well as committing simple, unsophisticated attacks that are difficult to detect in advance,” the assessment obtained by CNN says. The concern may be most prevalent in New York, where the FBI and the police department will monitor for potential threats Sunday ...All clear given after bomb squad investigates suspicious package outside FedEx Office in Midtown

WOBURN – In search of his first varsity goal, junior Liam Hansen felt he missed out on some good scoring opportunities over the Reading boys hockey team’s first few games of the year. But on Friday night, he cashed in on just about all of them.Behind a four-goal explosion from Hansen and an 18-save outing from senior goalie Chris Hanifan, No. 4 Reading (4-0) overpowered a slow start to come away with a signature, 6-1 win over No. 17 Winchester at O’Brien Ice Rink. Both groups were unbeaten in Middlesex League action, but that was until Hansen put in a career-day – including a pair of goals in the first that built a two-goal lead the Red and Black (3-2) couldn’t rally past.“(Hanifan) was good early, he made big saves when he had to,” said Reading head coach Mark Doherty. “Whenever we come into this rink and come away with a victory, we like it. … The end result was 6-1, but it’s never easy. Our league always is nip and tuck, it’s going to be close at the end of the year.”Winchester was...More than 100 anglers rescued from ice floe on Upper Red Lake

More than 100 anglers were rescued Friday evening after they became stranded on an ice floe that detached from the main shoreline of Upper Red Lake.It was at least the fourth rescue on Upper Red Lake in recent weeks as unseasonably warm temperatures have caused poor ice conditions across Minnesota.According to Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs, shortly before 5 p.m. Friday dispatchers received a call that some 100 people were stranded on an ice chunk on Upper Red Lake with more than 30 feet of open water separating them from shore.Initial reports indicated that no one had fallen through the ice, and emergency responders were dispatched to the southeast corner of the lake for an ice rescue. When first responders arrived on scene, they immediately began identifying a location that would be best suited to safely evacuate those stranded on the ice. Emergency responders staged at a resort.Because some anglers may not have been aware they were on the ice floe, Beltrami County Emergency M...Missouri beats No. 7 Ohio State 14-3 in Cotton Bowl

The defending champions are Thunderstruck. The Nuggets’ season-best six-game win streak is no more, sandwiched by losses at altitude to the same team 13 days apart. Unlike the first bookend, this one was convincing: a 119-93 bludgeoning by the Thunder on Friday night at Ball Arena. It was Denver’s worst loss at home since getting blasted by the Golden State Warriors, 142-111, on Jan. 15, 2019.Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whom the Nuggets (23-11) guarded exceptionally for the first seven quarters of their matchups this season, erupted for 40 points on 14-of-20 shooting in an encore to his last-second game-winning shot over Peyton Watson on Dec. 16.He scored 17 of those points on just seven field goal attempts in the third quarter as Oklahoma City (21-9) went on a definitive run. The Nuggets started the half with some steam after trailing 54-48, but after they got within two, their momentum halted the way it usually did: The Thunder clogged the paint, took away Nikola Jokic̵...Men’s basketball: Shorthanded CU Buffs topple Washington in Pac-12 opener

CU was able to answer a huge second-half charge by the Huskies with one of its own down the stretch, pulling away late for a 73-69 win Friday night at the CU Events Center.Da Silva suffered an injured ankle at practice on Thursday, and the Buffs also played without freshman reserve Bangot Dak, who has been battling an illness. FORT COLLINS — Beginning Tuesday, the games will be more significant for the No. 15 Colorado State men’s basketball team.Friday night’s game against Adams State at Moby Arena was all about fine-tuning ahead of the Rams’ Mountain West Conference opener against New Mexico.CSU had little trouble against the Division-II Grizzlies, rolling to a 106-61 victory to close out one of the program’s most successful nonconference slates in recent history. With the win, the Rams improved to 12-1, defeating their fifth in-state foe this season as part of that mark. The Grizzlies suffered the same fate as Northern Colorado, Colorado, Denver and CSU-Pueblo.“If you would have told me with the schedule we put together that we’d be 12-1, that’s really a terrific feat for these guys,” CSU head coach Niko Medved said. “We’ve earned the position that we’re in. Miles Wood has a particular brand of chaotic hockey, and this was a night that called out for it.The Avalanche struggled to create offensive chances for much of the game against the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center, but one late flurry was enough. A Devon Toews shot from the left point was the difference with 2:54 remaining in a quirky 2-1 win, but Wood’s play leading to the faceoff and in front of the goalie just before Toews’ shot helped create the game-winning tally. This was far from the prettiest win of Colorado’s season, but it could prove to be an important one. Ryan Johansen scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner, while Alexandar Georgiev made 28 saves.“It’s a character win,” Johansen said. “We look around the room after the game and are just nodding at each other. That’s how we need to win some games, especially on the road. It’s a feel-good win.”Colorado snapped a six-game losing skid away from Ball Aren...Latest news
